CBD vs THC

 

Cannabis is one of the most well-known plants around, but CBD (health care and supplemental product that is seeing something of a surge in terms of popularity) is actually derived from cannabis. As such, a lot of people who are new to the idea of taking CBD supplements may feel a little uneasy about doing so. After all, with such a strong stigma surrounding the use of marijuana drugs nowadays, there is naturally a concern that CBD supplementation could have similar side effects for consumers.

Luckily, though, CBD and marijuana are not the same, and pure CBD supplements will not make you “high” in the same way that marijuana will—and the reason for this is due to a cannabidiol compound known as THC.

CBD and THC are not the same

Many people are surprised to learn that CBD is derived from hemp, which is a strain of cannabis. However, there is an important difference between hemp and traditional strains of cannabis, and anyone who is considered taking CBD supplements should make sure that they are aware of this distinction.

 But what makes the hemp plant—and, as a result, the CBD that is derived from it—different from the generic cannabis plants that are used to make marijuana and other such drugs? The answer to this question lies in a compound known by the scientific community as tetrahydrocannabinol—otherwise referred to as THC.

What is THC?

THC is a cannabidiol compound that is found in cannabis plants, and it is this compound that is primarily to blame for the “high” that usually follows the consumption of marijuana. It is naturally produced by the cannabis plant and can vary in concentration from strain to strain; some strains of cannabis can have just 10% THC content, while other strains are more potent. In fact, modern strains of recreational cannabis can have a THC content of 25% or higher—and these give consumers the most powerful high imaginable.

THC is a cannabidiol compound and CBD also falls into this category. As such, it is no surprise that CBD gets tarnished with the same brush as THC. However, in reality, CBD is far removed from THC and certainly won’t cause the same high effects that people usually associate with cannabis consumption.

 

What is CBD?

CBD, in a similar manner to THC, is a cannabidiol compound. It is found naturally in almost all strains of cannabis plants, however, is not naturally occurring in high doses. However, there is one strain of cannabis that has been bred to produce high levels of CBD for use as a supplement and health product; this strain is known as Hemp. 

Hemp plants, unlike the majority of the other strains of cannabis, are exceptionally low in THC——the psychoactive compound that is found in all recreational cannabis plants. In fact, the THC content of Hemp strain plants is guaranteed to be 0.3% THC or lower; this is as much as 83 times lower than the level of THC found in powerful and potent recreational cannabis strains! 

When it comes to buying CBD supplements, it is important to make sure that you are buying a high-quality product. Poor quality CBD supplements could have been made from a concoction of different strain cannabis plants, and so may not be pure; these are far more likely to result in a high sensation than pure and uncontaminated supplements.

 

 

CBD vs THC

There are a number of important similarities and differences between THC and CBD. People who are thinking of trying CBD supplements may wish to learn about these in order to make an informed decision. Quality CBD supplements can offer numerous benefits for an individual’s health and wellbeing; however, the stigma surrounding cannabis use can make people concerned to step outside of their comfort zone and try it.

 

Similarities

THC and CBD share a few similarities, and these similarities are largely responsible for making people concerned about trying CBD supplements. The most notable of these is that they are both classed as being cannabidiol compounds. Moreover, both are derived from the cannabis plant, which has gained something of a bad reputation in recent times.

Both products are available for purchase in a range of concentrated supplemental forms, including oils, creams, infused in food products, in capsule and tablet forms, and more. In addition to this, both THC and CBD work on the endocannabinoid system in the body; this is a system that is significant in regards to the regulation and control of some of our most important bodily functions, including sleep, mood, and memory, as well as some others including appetite and our bodies’ reproductive systems.

 

Differences

Though THC and CBD are both cannabidiol compounds, they are very different from each other. For one thing, CBD is available in a far wider range of supplemental forms than THC and can be purchased in all of the aforementioned ways as well as in gummies and a larger variety of food products.

The biggest difference between CBD and THC is in terms of its activity and effects. While THC is the chemical responsible for giving people the “high” that is distinctive of cannabis consumption for recreational purposes, CBD is very different in how it affects the body. Indeed, though its effects are also on the endocannabinoid system, its effects are generally considered to be good as opposed to bad, as is the case for THC. But why is this? 

In the brain, both THC and CBD work by binding with the CBD1 receptors in the brain. However, CBD is far less strong when it comes to binding with this receptor when compared to THC. Thus, it does not trigger the same psychoactive effects, if at all; instead, CBD can help with an individual’s overall wellbeing for many reasons. The most common benefits of CBD supplementation include soothing and nausea control, as well as helping people suffering from depression and anxiety.

In Summary

CBD and THC are both derived from cannabis plants; however, they affect the body in very different ways. While THC creates a euphoric sensation responsible for marijuana’s notorious “high”, CBD doesn’t bind strongly enough with the CBD1 receptor in the brain to have this effect and so it actually beneficial for the body.
